Bu/This

Bir işaret zamirinden yola çıkan Nihat Özdal, “bu”yu sabitlemeye çalışmıyor; aksine, onun kayganlığını, yönsüzlüğünü, tanımsız ama tanıdık hissini çoğaltıyor. “Bu”nun neye işaret ettiğinden çok, nasıl ve ne zaman ortaya çıktığıyla ilgileniyor. Zamiri özneye dönüştürmeden, onun çevresinde dolaşan bir bilinç öneriyor: görmeden görme, söylemeden anlama, sabitlemeden sahiplenme.
Bu yapı, Roger Ballen’in görsel evreniyle tamamlanmaktan çok onunla çarpışıyor. Ballen’in siyah beyaz fotoğrafları, psikanalitik gölgeleriyle zamiri kuşatıyor, zaman zaman bastırıyor, zaman zaman boşluklar bırakıyor. Görüntüler, kelimelerin çevresinde dönüyor ama hiçbir zaman üstüne oturmuyor. "Bu" hiçbir şeyin sabit olmadığı bir kitap: anlam, biçim, ses ya da işaret. Hepsi, bir adım ötede, az önce geçmiş bir “bu”da kalmış...

Starting from a demonstrative pronoun, Nihat Özdal doesn’t attempt to fix or define “this”; on the contrary, he amplifies its slipperiness, its lack of direction, its undefined yet familiar feeling. He is less interested in what “this” points to, and more in how and when it appears. Without turning the pronoun into a subject, he proposes a consciousness that moves around it: seeing without looking, understanding without saying, possessing without fixing.

This structure does not complete itself through Roger Ballen’s visual universe — it collides with it. Ballen’s black-and-white photographs surround the pronoun with psychoanalytic shadows, at times suppressing it, at times leaving space around it. The images orbit the words, but never settle upon them. This is a book in which nothing is stable: not meaning, not form, not sound, not even the sign itself. Everything lingers a step away, in a “this” that just passed…
